27 Apr RSV Vaccines Now Available for Patients Aged 75+

We’re pleased to let our patients know that we now have stock of the RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vaccine, Arexvy®, available at our clinic.

From 15 May 2026, the RSV vaccine is free under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for:

•  Adults aged 75 years and over
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 years and over

What is RSV?

RSV is a common virus that can lead to serious respiratory illness, including pneumonia and bronchiolitis. Symptoms include runny nose, fever, coughing/wheezing/difficulty breathing, and earache and sinus pain. The risk of severe disease and hospitalisation increases with age, which is why vaccination is especially important for older adults.

About the vaccine

• Only one dose is required
• Protection lasts for at least 2 years
• It is safe and effective, with most side effects being mild (such as soreness at the injection site, fatigue, or headache)
• It can be given at the same time as other vaccines, including flu and COVID-19

When to get vaccinated

RSV infections are most common during the cooler months (April to September), so it’s recommended to get vaccinated before or early in the season where possible.
If you are not eligible for a free vaccine through the NIP program, you can purchase RSV vaccines privately. Talk to your GP about whether an RSV vaccine is recommended for you and how much it will cost.
